Woodbine Public Library seeks more open hours, expands outreach with launch pads and little free libraries

Woodbine Public Library staff told the Camden County Board of Commissioners that the library is open four hours a day, six days a week and wants expanded hours to meet community needs for public computers and document services used by courthouse patrons. Library representatives said the courthouse lacks public copying and internet-download facilities, and county residents come to the library to access those services.

At the meeting the library’s representative described a range of programs that serve children and adults and noted attendance as high as 45 adults at some adult programs. Library staff said Emily Long served as manager until the previous Friday and that oversight and support come from the 3 Rivers Regional Library and its new director, Jeremy Snell. Jeremy Snell told the board the library has received “launch pads” — child-oriented devices funded by a regional grant — that include early-literacy and basic math learning programs and can be checked out by patrons.

The library is also installing small “little free libraries” across the county. Staff said five permits have been obtained for locations including Mabel Ford Park, Spring Bluff, the Tarboro fire station, Harriet’s Bluff and a location near the Gateway Center; they also reported additional neighborhood requests after announcing the project.

Commissioners and county staff thanked library volunteers and staff for the library’s community programs, and the board’s members were invited to visit the facility and check the program schedule. The presentation did not require board action.
