Sonia Stills, commissioner with the Mid‑Eastern Athletic Conference, thanked the city for naming MEAC’s event corporate partner of the year and outlined programming for this year’s tournament in Norfolk.
Stills said the conference expanded its fan fest to run Friday and Saturday, will partner with an R&B block party for music and vendors, and is staging a college fair and the 17th annual ‘‘Read with the MEAC’’ program in Norfolk Public Schools. She said the Academy of International Studies at Rosemont won a $2,000 award tied to the program.
A new College Row will place admissions officers from all eight MEAC member institutions in an exhibition‑hall hallway throughout the week so students can interact with representatives. Stills said admissions staff will also visit local high schools during the tournament week to increase access for juniors and seniors.
Stills described a ‘‘homecoming’’ theme for the next three years and highlighted several ticketed social events, including a farewell brunch. She said the conference’s headquarters are in Norfolk and pledged continued outreach to local schools and organizations.
Council members thanked MEAC for local partnerships and for the education‑focused programming.
No formal action was taken; the presentation served as an informational briefing.
