Provo City traffic staff presented results of a speed and volume study on 1750 West to the Grandview Community Council after residents reported speeding. The posted speed limit on the local street is 25 mph.
Rachel, reporting for Transportation Manager Vern Kiesler, said the study (conducted over a Thursday–Sunday period) showed northbound average speed of 29 mph and an 85th-percentile speed of 34 mph; southbound average was 31 mph with an 85th-percentile of 36 mph. The highest recorded speeds were in the 40–50 mph range. Total volume over the recording period was about 2,139 vehicles (roughly 28 vehicles per hour combined), a low traffic volume by city standards.
Because crash data for the 2022–2024 period showed only two reported crashes on the street, and because the recorded speed and volume did not meet the thresholds in state and departmental guidance for engineering changes, the traffic manager replaced a missing 25 mph sign and forwarded speed data to the Provo Police Department for targeted enforcement. Rachel said state regulations and departmental thresholds govern when physical engineering changes (striping, traffic calming, lane narrowing) may be implemented.
Residents expressed ongoing concern about high speeds on other local streets and asked about potential countermeasures such as speed-display signs. The council noted the city has policies and thresholds it must follow before making traffic-engineering changes.
