The Kennesaw City Council on Monday approved a consent agenda that included road closures for the Big Shanty Festival April 11–13, acceptance of a Community Development Block Grant for sidewalk work, a stormwater pipe purchase, and professional and construction contracts for the city’s planned public safety facility.
Council members moved the handful of routine items to the consent agenda and approved them without separate roll-call votes. The staff presentation for event closures said, “The events committee recommends approval.” The road-closure plan covers April 11 at 6 p.m. through April 13 at 8 p.m. for multiple downtown streets, with a modified closure for the Big Shanty parade on Saturday, April 13.
City staff also reported that Cobb County had appropriated $117,446 in continuation CDBG funds for sidewalk installation in the Woodland Acres subdivision; the Council moved that resolution to consent. Public works staff requested purchase of 100 feet of 48-inch pipe and 200 feet of 60-inch pipe for a stormwater construction project; the lowest of three quotes was $30,470 and the purchase was approved on consent.
The Council approved a resolution to execute a professional services contract with Patterson and Doer to complete architectural/construction-administration work and to cover the remaining work previously assigned to Croft and Associates. In a related action, Gait Construction presented a guaranteed maximum price of $13,922,927 for construction of the public safety facility; Council approved the contract as a “not to exceed” amount as part of the consent agenda.
Other items approved by consent included a contract with RCS Productions for the 2025 concert series, renewal of the 2025 Sports Association facility-use agreement (the term was changed to conclude in November to aid spring planning), and the final plat revisions for the mixed-use development East Park Village (approximately 33.95 acres). Planning staff said the final plat revision updates property lines and county easements for water, sanitary and access to reflect current site conditions and that review agencies deemed it in compliance.
Votes at a glance: all the items described above were moved to and approved by consent during the work session. Specific roll-call tallies were not recorded in the transcript for these consent approvals; motions and seconds were recorded as "not specified" in the meeting record.
The Council placed the items on the consent agenda after brief clarifying questions from members about line-item breakdowns and stormwater allocations; staff said those breakdowns will be provided when final construction drawings are complete. The meeting record shows the Council’s intent to proceed while staff continues to refine cost allocations and funding sources.
Looking ahead, staff will return with final construction drawings and cost breakdowns for the public safety facility, and the administration will follow through on the CDBG and stormwater procurement steps approved by consent.
