Onslow County Schools highlights AFJROTC unit, state champion athletes and instructional technology achievements

At the meeting the board used its good-news spotlight to recognize several student and staff accomplishments across Onslow County Schools.
Mr. Anderson and other district staff invited members of the Northside High School Air Force Junior ROTC to the front of the room and announced that the unit earned an overall score of 92.5 on its unit assessment conducted Nov. 13, 2024. The presentation cited strong performance in mission briefing, drill, wellness programming, outreach and zero discrepancies on the assessment checklists. Instructors Master Sergeant (ret.) Curtis Locke and Master Sergeant (ret.) Sonny Murphy were singled out for their leadership.
The board also recognized student athletic achievements in 2025 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state championships. Jacksonville High senior Lauren Golston won the girls high jump (5 feet 4 inches) and also ran on state-final relay teams. Swansboro High senior James Yasunas won the boys pole vault with a personal best of 14 feet 6 inches. Swansboro junior Trevor Hucall won the 3A state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke and was runner-up in the 200 IM.
On instructional technology, Mr. Jeff Pittman, OCS chief technology officer, and his team were recognized for three Microsoft-related achievements: district implementation of Microsoft Intune for device management, adoption of Microsoft 365 and associated accessibility tools (Teams, Immersive Reader, Reading Progress), and deployment of the 1:1 device program that the presentation said supports approximately 30,000 Dell Latitude laptops across district sites.
Board members congratulated students, coaches, instructors and technology staff during board comments; no formal action was associated with the recognitions.
