Andrew Kreitz, a Wichita Falls resident, told the city council that pedestrian traffic has increased on Scott Avenue near the county annex since the facility reopened and urged the council to place a crosswalk safety item on a future agenda.
"It's at the point where every time I drive down Scott, I've got my eyes on a pedestrian that's either already in the middle of the road or attempting to cross it," Kreitz said. He described pedestrians crossing between the Sixth and Seventh Street intersections where there is no marked crosswalk, no yield signs and no flashers.
Kreitz said he reviewed the Wichita Falls law briefly and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and concluded that a signalized crosswalk would be inappropriate. He asked the council to consider a painted crosswalk, an overhead yield pedestrian sign with flashers or hybrid flasher beacons to improve safety. He also said he has had to "emergency stop at least twice" for pedestrians in the roadway.
Kreitz asked that "a council member propose to place this item on a future agenda." The council did not take action on the request during the meeting; staff may take factual follow-up under city public-comment rules but no direction or formal referral was recorded in the transcript.
