Wichita Falls council approves two public-safety grants totaling $124,017

The council approved an ordinance appropriating $90,000 from the Texas Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (Catalytic Converter Grant Program). City staff said the original application sought $108,000; the award covers $90,000 and the city located the required 20% local match of $18,000 in the budget to make up the remainder. The grant will continue the city’s camera program funded in prior years under the same grant.
Council also approved an ordinance appropriating $34,017 from the 2024 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG). City staff said the JAG award will be shared with the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office, with the city receiving $20,410.20 and the county receiving $13,606.80. City staff said the city intends to use its share to purchase a Polaris Ranger crew cab utility vehicle for patrol and special-event patrols downtown and on trail systems.
Mayor Tim Short called for the voice votes. "All in favor, say aye. Aye. All opposed. That motion passes," he said after each ordinance was moved and seconded.
No additional conditions, ordinance numbers or roll-call vote tallies were specified in the meeting record. The council authorized the city manager or his designee to execute documents necessary to accept and share the funds for both grants.
