Lawrence County OKs Resolution to Host One Glass-collection Event with Pennsylvania Resources Council

Lawrence County commissioners on March 4 approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Pennsylvania Resources Council to host a two-week glass-collection event.

The action, Resolution 48, authorizes the county to participate in the council’s traveling glass-bin program and schedules the collection for May 31 through June 12 at the Newcastle location near the county jail, where the county’s blue recycling bins are located.

The resolution grew out of the county recycling office’s request. Megan Gehring of the county recycling office told commissioners the council’s traveling program provides glass collection services the county had suspended previously when market conditions made local curbside or bin glass recycling cost-prohibitive. Gehring said the counties have received funding that will allow Lawrence County to offer glass recycling on its own in the future, reducing or eliminating the need to contract for the service going forward.

Commissioners confirmed the event will be publicized on county web pages and social media. Gehring said Mercer County’s commissioners have signed a parallel agreement for their territory; the Lawrence County resolution applies only to Lawrence County.

The board approved the resolution by roll call; the motion carried.

Practical details: the collection will use the Newcastle drop-off near the jail, which commissioners described as centrally located for the county. The county’s regular blue bins will continue to accept cardboard and paper only; this event is a temporary means for residents to recycle accumulated glass.

The commissioners did not discuss fee changes or long-term operational costs in the meeting. The resolution authorizes the agreement and creates the framework for the single, two-week collection period.
