The Jefferson Union board recognized Jasmine Combs, a sophomore at Westmore High School, for qualifying for the state cross-country finals and for being named all-league in both the PAL and CCS leagues, district communications staff said.
Denise Shreve, the district director introduced Jasmine and noted she is the second sophomore in Westmore history to qualify and compete at the state finals and that the district appreciates her coach, Ron DiMaggio. "Jasmine is a true role model to her peers," Shreve said.
Coach Ron DiMaggio told the board that Jasmine had a strong season, overcame an injury last year and had run well against older competitors to earn a state berth. He described her as a hardworking athlete with substantial upside and said Westmore has high expectations for her continued development.
Jasmine addressed the board to thank her family, coaches and teammates. She said she has run since she was 6 and that qualifying for state "was a huge accomplishment" that surpassed her expectations. She told the board she felt grateful for the chance to compete and for the support that helped her return from injury.
The board applauded the recognition. Coach DiMaggio and district staff said they will keep the board updated about Jasmine and other athletes representing the district at postseason competitions.
