West Richland names Steven Crown interim police chief

Mayor Brent Gary introduced Steven Crown as West Richland’s interim police chief at the City Council meeting on March 4, 2025. Crown, who began the job two days earlier, was described by the mayor as having a 33-year career in law enforcement and leadership experience that includes serving as police chief for the Wenatchee Police Department and as Chief of Police for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The appointment followed brief remarks from Crown, who said he was still completing onboarding but is eager to work with staff and the public. “I’m looking forward to working with them to hopefully build some teams and continue to work hard within our department serving the community,” Crown said. He added that he values visibility within the community and expects to assist during the city’s search for a permanent chief.
Mayor Gary said the city will circulate Crown’s contact information to council members and encouraged residents to share input. Councilmembers and staff welcomed Crown and noted his experience supervising both sworn and noncommissioned personnel.
Crown did not discuss a timeline for the permanent chief search at the meeting. No formal vote or ordinance accompanied his interim appointment during the March 4 session.
The remarks occurred during the opening portion of the March 4 council meeting, after the agenda was approved and before the meeting’s public hearings and ordinances.
