Washburn Rural students showcase theater season, plan outreach and international competition

The students said more than 100 classmates participated in extracurricular theater this year and that 13 students qualified for an international festival. They noted the program received “gold honor troupe” status at the Kansas Thespian Festival and staged multiple productions and events, including a fall play, a musical cabaret to raise funds, and a spring production of Sense and Sensibility.
The students described outreach plans that include a touring youth production and collaboration with elementary classrooms. One student told the board, “Your support of our theater program allows us to access these invaluable experiences.” Another student said the international festival will be held in Indiana. The students also said they will participate in a statewide theater advocacy visit to the Kansas State Capitol later in March.
Board members asked about the meaning of gold honor troupe status and how the award is determined; a student explained schools submit documentation (service, number of productions, collaboration, outreach) and are rated bronze, silver or gold. The students said the troupe also coordinates with nearby high schools to expand opportunities and community engagement.
The board did not take formal action on the presentation. The students were thanked and the board agreed to place DECA and similar student trip items on the consent agenda so the groups can continue planning.
