Committee advances public hearing on whether to retain Honolulu youth commission charter provision

The committee took the action after a brief staff update and member questions. Kevin Wong of the Managing Director’s Office told the committee the commission will request $8,000 in the coming budget, down from about $10,000 previously. "Yes, there will be a request. It is lower than last time. I believe last time it was $10,000. This year, we're gonna be asking for 8," Wong said. He said most past spending went to materials for town meetings, a newsletter and a few other items the commission has pursued.
No members of the public registered to testify in person or remotely on the item. Committee members asked how the commission could be made more effective and suggested administrative alignments to increase impact. Member Topolo said commissions often operate best when partnered with an operating department and suggested the Parks Department as one option because it runs many youth programs; Topolo also suggested the Neighborhood Commission Office as another administrative home that could help the Youth Commission advocate to relevant departments.
Committee members also asked whether additional council support could help the commission increase public outreach; Wong said staff are "trying to get them more out there, make it more available for the public" and that the reduced request reflects prior underspending.
After discussion, the chair recommended the report be reported out for scheduling of a public hearing and adoption. The committee chair called for objections; none were raised and the motion passed. The committee then adjourned.
