The Manitowoc School District board voted to add three youth apprenticeship positions for the coming year, increasing the program from 22 to 25 individual student positions, district staff said.
Bonnie Roseniak, coordinator of the high school apprenticeship program, outlined the mix of new placements — including information technology, English language assistance, school nursing, a physical/occupational therapy slot, speech‑language pathology and maintenance — and said the positions target fields with high local demand. Roseniak noted each apprentice is an individual student working toward a required total of hours for program completion.
Interim Superintendent Michael Nault told the board the proposal would add roughly three positions (individual students) and that apprentices typically work 12–14 hours per week and must reach about 450 total hours. Nault said the net increase in district cost is about $29,000. Board members voiced support for giving students career exposure and noted examples of former apprentices who became local employees.
A motion to approve the apprenticeship staffing increase was made and seconded; the board approved the measure by voice vote. The apprenticeship coordinator and district staff will follow up on operational and recruiting details.
