Board approves Lincoln High JV2 soccer slot after athletics staff say participation supports new team

Interim Superintendent Michael Nault presented participation counts and a budget estimate for the proposed JV2 slot, saying the district compiled multi‑year participation figures and that both Director of Athletics Stan Dietrich and head boys soccer coach Matt Cato described the numbers as "solid, solid, solid." Nault said the additional JV2 program would cost about $6,200 and staff had prepared a tentative 16‑game schedule pending board approval.
Nault also described retention from middle school programs and projected future enrollments: "we're looking at by the 28‑29 school year, having upwards of 80 to 85 kids," he said, citing feeder participation and retention that underpinned the recommendation. Coach Matt Cato and Dietrich told the board the roster numbers were sufficient to field a stable additional team and that a JV2 would give younger players more game opportunities.
The board voted by voice; the motion carried. The district said the JV2 schedule would follow Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) limits: WIAA caps schedules for teams that are wholly freshmen at 16 games.
The board did not specify individual vote tallies in the public record.
The athletics office will finalize the schedule and operational details for the JV2 program before the season.
