District construction manager Nick gave the board an update on renovation work at North Hudson, EP Rock, Hudson Prairie and the middle school during the March 20 meeting.
Nick said Phase 2 work at North Hudson is underway (gym floor poured; classrooms preparing to be turned over) and EP Rock demolition has started. He described an unforeseen acoustic issue at EP Rock: partition walls between classrooms do not extend to the structural deck, so sound carries between rooms; the renovation plan calls for building metal-stud walls with insulation and new drywall to reduce sound transfer. Nick said no asbestos abatement was required in the parts of EP Rock currently under demolition.
The district plans a two-day power and water shutdown at Hudson Prairie middle school during spring break to install additional domestic water shutoffs and switch electrical panels. Nick advised that the school’s pool will close April 1 for about two months for new ventilation equipment, destratification fans and heating work. He explained the pool-drain and refill process: water must be neutralized to avoid environmental harm before pumping to the creek and the refilling and heating process takes several days.
Board members asked about scheduling of meets and rental groups; Nick said the district coordinated timing with local users. A trustee asked whether the EP Rock wall issue violated code; Nick said the building will be sprinklered and the planned wall construction addresses sound rather than fire code violations.
No formal action was taken; the update provided status and next steps.
