County staff pursue renewed agreement and Ecology coordination on PUD natural gas effort

County staff said they are continuing efforts to advance a proposed natural gas project involving the Public Utility District (PUD) and the Washington Department of Ecology, with recent engagement from the governor’s office.
A staff member said Department of Ecology representatives had been invited to join a 2:30 p.m. meeting about the PUD’s natural gas proposal and that Ecology staff (Shauna and Babak) and the governor’s office might participate. “He’s got he’s been working with the governor's office, and so you might have the governor in on his team's meeting,” the staff member said.
County staff and PUD met about three weeks earlier and found continued interest on both sides. Staff said the county’s agreement with the PUD is past its expiration date and indicated they may prepare a new, one-year agreement with the PUD to keep the project moving while Ecology and state-level requirements are re-evaluated.
No binding commitments or contract awards were made at the briefing. Staff described the county’s financial role as relatively small compared with the PUD’s anticipated contribution and said they would attempt another coordinated effort with Ecology to see if any state requirement changes could allow the project to proceed.
Staff said they will continue outreach with Ecology, the governor’s office and PUD and will return with any developments.
