Committee moves to make Interstate Compact for military children permanent in Florida

The Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security on Oct. 12 reported favorably on SB 400, a bill to remove the repeal date for Florida's participation in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.
Senator Wright, explaining the measure, said the compact — to which all 50 states belong — helps member states address educational transition issues faced by military families transferring under official military orders. Wright said the compact has required renewal every three years since February 2008 and that SB 400 would allow the compact to continue without periodic renewals while leaving the Legislature the option to repeal it in the future.
Logan Bridal, waiving in support on behalf of the Foundation for Florida's Future, was recorded as supporting the bill. Committee members who spoke characterized the measure as a simple, pro-military-family step to reduce administrative steps and ensure continuity for students of service members.
By roll call, the committee reported SB 400 favorably. Senators Burgess, Jones, Sharif, Trunnell, Chair Wright and Chair Collins were recorded as voting yes. The committee chair announced the bill was "reported favorably."
The compact coordinates policies on school enrollment, course placement, records transfers and graduation requirements for children of military families; SB 400 would remove Florida's periodic repeal requirement so the state's participation continues without a three-year renewal. The bill will continue through the legislative process as a committee-reported measure.
