Committee Endorses Fair Housing Month Events, Plans Outreach in Multiple Languages

The Wausau Economic Development Committee on March 4 voted to endorse events and outreach activities for Fair Housing Month in April, to be funded and promoted in part with federal program funds.
Tammy Struts, a city staff member, said federal funding the city receives encourages promotion of fair housing and that the Affordable Housing Task Force has been planning outreach including a poster contest for schoolchildren. “We’re looking at doing a poster contest with school kids of what does fair housing look like,” Struts said; she added the campaign title will be “Access: Opening Doors for All.”
Struts said staff are coordinating with the Hmong American Center and other community groups to reach multiple language communities and that event dates and locations are still being finalized. Shannon, a task-force contributor mentioned by staff, noted the municipal website already has a Fair Housing page and the contest submission link.
Alder Henke moved to endorse the Fair Housing Month events; Alder Killian seconded. The committee voted by voice and approved the endorsement.
Staff asked council members to participate in events where possible and said final schedules and award details would be posted on the city website when set.
