Commissioner Charlene Russell‑Tucker briefed the State Board of Education on several agency-level initiatives and interventions during the March 5 meeting.
Bridgeport intervention: The department has deployed a four-member technical assistance team to Bridgeport public schools. The team held an entrance conference with local leaders, began listening sessions with students and educators, and will provide monthly updates to the board. Commissioner Russell‑Tucker said the department is committed to transparency and community engagement as the intervention proceeds.
Artificial intelligence and digital citizenship pilot: The department launched an AI education pilot and digital citizenship curriculum in six districts—East Hartford, Lebanon, Rocky Hill, Seymour, Wethersfield (noted as “Wazeport” in transcript) and Odyssey Community School in Manchester. More than 50 educators and administrators will participate in professional learning and classroom implementation to study impacts on critical thinking, communication and collaboration. The department plans an AI event for superintendents and partners such as the MIT-affiliated Dei and AI initiative.
Federal funding monitoring: The commissioner said the department is monitoring federal funding risks and coordinating with the governor’s office and other state agencies; as of the meeting the department reported no interruptions to federal program funding, including IDEA and Child Nutrition.
Strategic‑plan progress and educator pipeline: The commissioner reported progress on the department’s five‑year comprehensive plan, including guidance and training to reduce exclusionary discipline, new guidelines for board‑certified behavior analysts (BCBAs), expansion of educator apprenticeship programs, scholarship awards to diversify the educator pipeline, and interstate reciprocity extended to 22 jurisdictions. The department noted an increase in educators of color to 12.1% of the workforce, up from 8.3% in 2015–16.
Ending: The commissioner said the department will continue monthly reporting on interventions and will publish updates on implementation of the strategic priorities.
