The superintendent told the subcommittee that Brockton’s Community Schools provide a wide range of enrichment programming including swimming, middle‑school football, community basketball, wrestling, track and baseball, along with after‑school academics and music programming.
Staff said the Community Schools program served just under 1,000 student athletes across three seasons and noted a summer catalog of program offerings will be posted soon on the Community Schools website. Leaders described collaboration with Bridgewater State’s physical education department to align PE curriculum and intramural opportunities at the middle‑school level.
District presenters highlighted media partnerships that give students hands‑on exposure to journalism and digital media. The superintendent reported a recent WCVB media mentors event and a workshop hosted with Massasoit Community College that brought 40 Brockton High students to a panel and studio tour; staff said WCVB donated an anchor desk to the BHS TV studio. District staff also described a long‑standing working relationship with BCA (local access provider) and said BCA can use the district’s studio when needed and has helped film concerts in prior years; staff suggested more internship opportunities could be developed in some years depending on student interest.
No formal votes or contract approvals were taken at the subcommittee meeting. Staff said they will post the community schools summer catalog and continue to build partnerships that provide hands‑on experiences for students.
