Council approves demolition agreement for dilapidated sign at 1505 West Walnut Avenue

Dalton City Council on Monday approved a demolition agreement for a deteriorated sign at 1505 West Walnut Avenue, commonly referred to in staff remarks as the old Pizza Hut sign.
Dan, a code enforcement official, told the council the city's code enforcement unit had been addressing sign violations along the West Walnut Avenue corridor since May 2023 and that several signs had previously been removed under demolition agreements. He said this sign met the city's criteria for deterioration and abandonment and that the current property owner had signed a demolition agreement and would reimburse the city for costs.
Dan said the sign's size would not require renting a crane and materials were recyclable so landfill tipping fees would not apply. He also said title work cost was about $350 and the owner agreed to repay that amount. "The current owner of the property has signed a demolition agreement. As part of that agreement, they will reimburse the city any cost ... the cost of the title work is about $350, and they have agreed to repay the city for that," Dan said.
After a brief opportunity for questions, a council member moved to approve the demolition agreement and the council voted in favor on a voice vote.
The approval allows code enforcement to proceed with removing the sign under the demolition agreement and to recover the stated costs from the property owner. Staff indicated the demolition would be carried out without special equipment rental or landfill tipping fees because materials are recyclable.
