Legislators back childcare eligibility expansion, debate Medicaid amendment and nonprofit concerns

On childcare, Davis said she will support House Bill 1132, which would expand eligibility for childcare assistance so that some childcare workers could qualify. Davis argued workforce support for daycare is vital, noting many childcare workers "are making very low wages, $12, $15 an hour if they're lucky." Representative Chris Cassin said HB1132 passed the House and would be considered by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee; he added the bill's fiscal impact was small given available one-time money.
On Medicaid expansion and a related constitutional amendment, Senator Davis said the amendment would not automatically roll back expansion if the federal match changed but would allow the Legislature to consider changes if the federal percentage dropped from the current 90/10 split. "It's not a trigger... it's saying, hey, if this changes, you will... have the ability to contemplate changes," she said.
A local resident raised concerns about Lutheran Social Services after national allegations of financial misconduct surfaced. Representative William Shorma and Senator Davis said they did not have detailed information about the accusations and would reserve judgment; Shorma said LSS has a long local history of refugee services and other programs and that any allegations should be examined before punitive action taken.
Ending: Legislators encouraged public input at committee hearings for HB1132, the Medicaid amendment and any oversight steps affecting nonprofit providers.
