Parks committee updates: Depot Plaza design, Ship Harbor trail options and Cap Santee lookout ribbon cutting set

At the March 3 Anacortes City Council meeting, the Parks and Recreation Committee reported several active projects, public-comment opportunities and a scheduled ribbon cutting for the Cap Santee lookout.
Councilmember McDougall, who presented the committee report, said the Depot Plaza expansion design is moving forward with a bid package expected in early summer. The Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL) plan is open for public comment through March 6 and the committee will host an in-person comment session the same evening in the public library community room.
McDougall said the department held a community meeting on Jan. 30 for improvements at West Sixth and Minnesota Park; notes and suggestions from participants are being incorporated into project planning. He named a Parks staffer, Mr. Vox, as the project manager on that effort.
The Ship Harbor pedestrian trail suffered major storm-related washout. The committee said staff are exploring partnership options with Samish and the Port of Anacortes to rebuild the trail and that a 2026 timeframe is possible for reconstruction, depending on funding and permitting.
The Parks Department has collected about 700 responses to a senior activity center needs assessment survey, staff said. The committee announced a ribbon cutting for the Cap Santee lookout at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The department is also discussing a potential collaboration with the school district to add pickleball to tennis courts at 20 Second Street; the committee said it will consider neighborhood impacts, including possible noise concerns.
Ending: Committee members said they will continue community outreach on ACFL and park projects and return when project designs and funding steps are ready for council consideration.
