Spalding County has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) to support a Public Service Apprenticeship Program that will place two county firefighters into a registered apprenticeship to earn EMT certification, county grant writer Larry Wallace told commissioners on March 3.
Wallace said the county requested funding for four apprentices (three for fire and one for a public‑services project manager) and was awarded funding for two firefighter apprentices. The apprentices will enroll at Southern Crescent Technical College for the two‑year registered apprenticeship that combines on‑the‑job training and classroom instruction; the program leads to a certification upon completion and pairs each apprentice with an on‑site mentor.
Wallace said the county can apply annually for additional apprenticeships and that Southern Crescent has additional grant opportunities to expand the program. Commissioners asked about other funding sources such as the Georgia Trauma Commission; Wallace said staff are pursuing all available grant options.
