Spalding County has been awarded $80,115 from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Environmental Protection Division to resurface the walking trail at Sunnyside Park using recycled tire products, county grant writer Larry Wallace told commissioners on March 3.
Wallace said the work will include resurfacing the trail with tire-derived material, addressing drainage problems along the path and improving accessibility. He told the board there is no local match required for this grant. "No matches required for this," Wallace said when asked about county cost.
Timing and administration: Wallace said the grant is reimbursable. Once the county has a signed and countersigned agreement it is expected to start work within 30 days; the grant timeline allows approximately a year for completion and the county anticipates finishing well before that date. Wallace noted reimbursement timelines from the state were not specified; his experience is reimbursements are often completed within about 30 days but the state did not guarantee a schedule.
Ending: Commissioners expressed support and asked staff to proceed with the agreement paperwork so work can begin under the reimbursement terms.
