Residents raise safety concerns at Lake County Board meeting over Vista Hospital operations

Several residents used the public-comment period on Feb. 11 to press the Lake County Board for action or attention regarding Vista Hospital, saying ongoing safety and operational problems there pose community risks.

Rayon Edwards told the Board he had attended a Feb. 2024 press conference at the Lake County Health Department and had since "heard nothing from my members as it relates to this hospital." Edwards said the hospital had failed to deliver on promises made by its owners and described the facility as "dangerous," adding that patients continue to go there despite the problems. He warned that if another public-health emergency occurred, nearby hospitals could be overwhelmed, saying, "Where do they go?" and noting capacity pressures in Lake Forest, Libertyville and Gurnee.

Richard Taylor, who identified himself as familiar with the hospital, said he was concerned for staff safety. Taylor described instances when security staff left before clinicians did, requiring employees to ask a janitor to walk them to their car. He said hospital security "has to leave at 8" while medical staff work later and that staff feel threatened for their safety.

Commenters asked county leaders to follow up on prior attention to the hospital and to support community-led pressure for changes at the facility. The Board did not record a formal directive in the meeting minutes to pursue enforcement or regulatory action on the hospital during this session.
