County OKs temporary detours for FDOT SR-85 milling; work planned overnight in Shalimar area

The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a request from the Florida Department of Transportation to use county side roads as detour routes while FDOT performs deep milling and resurfacing on State Route 85. The requested detours affect local streets in the Shalimar/Cinco Bayou area, including Beach View Drive and Fourth Avenue.
Jason Autry, public-works presenter, said the FDOT “three-yard” milling work is deep enough in places to disrupt pavement-detection loops at signalized intersections; the agency proposed overnight closures and detours to reduce daytime traffic disruption. Autry said FDOT plans to advertise contract work this summer with construction expected in late 2025. Commissioners asked staff to press FDOT to include temporary signal detection or temporary signal controls in the contract so signal timing and detection remain responsive during milling operations. Autry said the county will push FDOT to include temporary detection and, if necessary, use county traffic resources to mitigate disruptions.
