Staff said approval would create a temporary negative balance for Sullivan's Island urban funds until the FY26 allocation arrives in July.
Fanning described sediment transport changes caused by jetties, resulting marsh expansion and wetland formation that are raising maintenance needs for the existing boardwalk. She told the subcommittee the project has community support and that the replacement aims to extend the structure’s service life by elevating it above the recurrent water level. A motion to approve passed by voice vote; the transcript records the vote as unanimous with no roll-call tally.
The town will proceed with design and construction planning and is responsible for local permitting and construction oversight if funding is released.
