Mission Economic Development Corporation reports sales-tax surge; council OKs $250,000 reimbursement for Sherry Municipal Golf Course

The Mission Economic Development Corporation told the Mission City Council it recorded an exceptionally strong sales-tax month and highlighted several local business support efforts, and the council approved a $250,000 reimbursement agreement with MEDC for municipal-golf-course improvements.
Tecla Garcia, CEO of the Mission Economic Development Corporation, said the city reported $3,319,000 in sales-tax revenue for the December reporting month (reported in February), which she described as “an all time high” for Mission for a single month and “a 27% jump from last year at this time.” Garcia credited the city’s small businesses for the increase and noted Mission led larger local cities in percentage growth for that month.
Garcia also briefed council on MEDC programs, including the Ruby Red Ventures Build Mission Fund, which in its second year awarded about $15,000 each to 16 small businesses (about $220,000 total) and that MEDC has invested roughly $850,000–$900,000 in local small businesses over the past 15–18 months, according to her presentation. She reported ongoing outreach at industry conferences and partnership activity intended to recruit projects to the area, and she described an expansion by a business-process-outsourcing firm, Ubiquiti, that has hired roughly 300 workers and was training another 100 for local positions.
Separately on the consent/authorization agenda, the council authorized a reimbursement agreement between the City of Mission and MEDC for Sherry Municipal Golf Course water-well, sod and pump-station improvements in the amount of $250,000. The MEDC board had approved the funding as part of its budget process on February 26; the council’s vote to authorize the reimbursement agreement was unanimous, 5–0.
Council members asked about the golf-course project scope and whether grant opportunities could offset costs; staff said the MEDC approved the project as part of its budget process and the reimbursement arrangement will process MEDC-allocated payments. City staff and MEDC indicated the improvements are intended to support course operations and irrigation.
The MEDC presentation and the reimbursement agreement approval were presented as part of the council’s regular meeting.
