The Woburn City Traffic Commission on Feb. 20 acknowledged a petition to remove a handicapped parking space in front of 48 Beacon Street and directed that the request follow established procedures, including review by the Commission on Disability and two readings before forwarding to the City Council and mayor.
Sam Hole, representing the petitioner Carlos (owner of 48 Beacon Street), said the property changed hands and that the previous resident, Eileen Walsh, was the one who had requested the handicapped space. "He wants to be able to park in front of his house so that's why we're requesting it be removed," Hole said.
Commission staff explained that removal of a disabled parking space requires input from the Commission on Disability, two readings before the traffic commission (a schedule change to the traffic code), and approval by city council and the mayor. The commission did not take a final vote to remove the space; rather, members confirmed the petition is in process and that the petitioner should contact the city clerk's office and the Commission on Disability to request that commission's review.
Staff estimated the overall process could take several months depending on scheduling; no final action was taken at the Feb. 20 meeting.
