Beltrami County OKs easements for Bemidji roundabout amid concerns about ball field impacts

Beltrami County commissioners voted 4-0 to approve easements with the City of Bemidji for a planned roundabout project, despite reservations from some members about impacts to local ball fields and project timing.

Administrator Berry told the board that county staff had negotiated the easement language and locations and were satisfied with the answers received. Berry said city engineers were not available for questions at the meeting but the county’s engineer and natural resources director had worked on the project.

Commissioner Carlson said he was “not in favor of that roundabout there” but said safety concerns and potential taxpayer savings if the work is packaged with other roadwork made him “reluctantly in favor.” Commissioner Gould moved to approve the easement “as proposed”; Commissioner Winger seconded. Commissioner Gould asked that the city reach out to ball-field stakeholders to limit impacts; a motion carried 4-0.

Why it matters: county staff said timing is critical to save taxpayer dollars by coordinating the roundabout with other roadwork. Commissioners emphasized safety and asked the city to try to minimize disruption to youth baseball fields and summer tournaments.

The board recorded no amendments to the easement language during the meeting and provided direction that the county would expect the city to coordinate with affected recreation groups.
