Members of the Grosse Ile Greenways & Open Space Committee used the March 11 meeting to coordinate outreach for Earth Day and school partnerships, review an Eagle Scout volunteer proposal, and discuss improved signage and trail maps.
Committee members said they are working with teachers and the Nature and Land Conservancy to align Earth Day activities and school service projects. The committee expects school-based student groups — including environmental-awareness clubs and high-school liaisons — to help with sign-cleaning and trail litter pickup, and members asked the Nature Conservancy and school staff to identify dates and volunteer lists.
An Eagle Scout named Joshua Brulew contacted the committee about an Eagle project. Members suggested potential projects that would meet Eagle-Scout project requirements, including constructing simple natural seating, installing directional posts, building small kiosks with QR codes to link to trail maps, or installing bat/wood-duck boxes. Members noted some existing log benches are deteriorated and would be suitable candidates for repair or replacement by a Scout project.
Signage and digital mapping Committee members proposed placing simple directional posts at confusing trail junctions, and discussed placing QR codes at trailheads that link to the committee’s printed trail maps online. Members said they prefer natural materials for signs and benches to keep a low-impact aesthetic.
Volunteer and school coordination The committee said it will coordinate with township communications, the Nature Conservancy and school staff (Dr. Julia Roscoe was named as a school contact) to recruit students for Earth-Week activities and to advertise events to senior-housing residents and other community groups.
