Students to paint Grosse Ile sculpture in staged mural project; planning commission trimmed master-plan recommendations and loan request defeated

DDA staff reported that two art teachers from the local schools will work with classrooms to create a staged mural on a public "GI" sculpture. Staff said one section would be painted per year and graduating seniors would sign the back of the sculpture; the students are expected to present a plan to the DDA next month.

Separately, staff told the board that several items the DDA recommended in its master-plan action list were amended or removed by the planning commission; the planning commission’s final decisions and the DDA’s original recommendations will be posted online. The DDA also said an interdepartmental loan request — intended as a contingency if the DDA secures a MEDC grant for park work — was not approved by the township board. Staff described the township vote as influenced by new board members still reviewing departmental budgets. The DDA said it will pursue alternative funding mechanisms if the township does not revisit the loan request.
