Teachers and students highlighted: district professional development, awards and upcoming events

District staff told the board the recent staff-development period focused on student-centered instructional work, ethics training and implicit-bias awareness, and several educators praised the time set aside for team planning and re-licensure components.
"I feel respected by having the school board be aware of our needs and listening to those needs and doing things to help us," said Therese Netzer, an instructional coach and high school teacher, describing the professional-development sessions and their focus on standards-aligned planning and student motivation.
The board noted local honors: Jeff Jensen (high school) and Stacy Waltman (elementary media specialist) received the Southeast Service Cooperative STEM Forward outstanding educator awards, and students Gunnar Hardinson and Nevaeh Wachol were recognized with AAA student awards.
Upcoming student events announced to the board included a district robotics competition on Feb. 15, a spring play production of Princess and the Pea, a dance-team showcase, and boys and girls hockey games. Show choir is starting at the high school, and the district is exploring a future competitive show-choir team accompanied by a live band.
The board also heard that solo and ensemble contests produced multiple awards (one speaker recounted four recognitions). Members encouraged bringing the AAA student award winners to a future meeting for recognition.
