Council approves application for $78,575 court-security grant for panic system, cameras and exit work

Adams County commissioners and council members on Sept. 4 approved seeking a court-security grant from the state to update courthouse panic alarms, install video-monitoring equipment and create an emergency exit for the county’s child-services office adjacent to the clerk/court facility.
Sandy (County staff) presented the request and described the scope: updated panic buttons that integrate with sheriff communications, video monitors to allow staff to view security cameras in the clerk’s and circuit-court offices, and construction of an emergency exit for the child-services (4-D) office. Sandy said vendor estimates were obtained and the total grant request to the state’s court-security program is $78,575.01. She noted the county commission had already approved pursuing the grant and brought the request to the council for permission to submit the application.
“...the total amount that they're requesting to apply for is $78,575.01 the commissioners had approved this last week so it is now coming before council, for them to get approval to seek this grant as a court reform grant,” Sandy said.
Council action: a motion to proceed with the state grant application was made, seconded and approved by the council.
Why it matters: the proposed upgrades are intended to improve courthouse safety and situational awareness for court staff and neighboring offices; the grant would cover equipment and construction costs for the courthouse (the grant does not cover the annex, which would require an additional $33,000 estimate to upgrade under the vendor's proposal).
Next steps: staff will submit the state grant application and, if awarded, the county will proceed with equipment purchase and limited construction in the courthouse; additional work at the annex could be pursued in a later application cycle.
