Several Skokie residents addressed the board Monday to urge changes in transportation planning and street maintenance priorities, focusing on the proposed Crawford Avenue redesign, long-delayed repairs to Church Street and alley plowing policies.
Greg Schneider, a resident near Madison and Crawford, said the Crawford Avenue redesign "would be a significant mistake" that would reduce traffic lanes and worsen rush-hour congestion. Schneider and several neighbors said they had not seen adequate public outreach on the plan and urged broader community engagement or a referendum. His wife, Christy Pamarecki Schneider, and other neighbors said they opposed placing bike lanes on Crawford and suggested alternate corridors for cyclists, arguing Crawford serves as a major thoroughfare that should retain vehicular capacity.
David Dalka detailed ongoing complaints about Church Street, saying repeated requests to county and village staff for repaving have not produced results. Dalka presented repair bills he said resulted from vehicle damage and said the road now needs full reconstruction rather than resurfacing. Village staff responded that some coordination with county agencies is required and that the project will not be done this spring.
Magalia Casia urged the village to treat certain alleys as streets for plowing and de-icing, saying lack of service left her unable to leave her home during icy conditions. Village Manager John Lockerbie explained the village’s prioritized plowing system, noting alleys are plowed after six inches of snow and main roads receive priority; staff said they would consider the concerns.
Speakers also raised broader questions about how the village communicates project plans to residents and the need to balance visible branding projects with pressing resident-service needs. Trustees acknowledged the comments and said staff would follow up on specific infrastructure requests.
