"Miss Sued was the select board member that recommended the $50, and I believe it was a reasonable amount based on the cost that the council incurred to inspect those," the town's building official said during the hearing. The fee change was introduced as a motion and moved by Chuck (Select Board member). The motion to increase the junkyard license fee to $50 "effective next year" was seconded; the board carried the motion by voice vote and the chair announced, "Aye. Motion carries."
Board members and staff said the $50 level was intended to better reflect inspection costs. The building inspector noted the town currently permits three junkyards and said the deputy health officer and he would begin inspections immediately, starting with Windy Garage.
The select board and staff clarified timing for implementation during discussion. One board member said permit renewals are typically effective April 1 and another cited 2026 in the discussion; the motion as moved stated the increase would be "effective next year." The board did not record a roll-call tally of votes for the motion, and no detailed fee schedule or ordinance amendment language was presented on the record at the hearing.
