Sulphur council postpones some condemnation cases, extends deadlines and orders one demolition

The Sulphur City Council handled multiple code-enforcement items, extending repair deadlines for two properties and approving condemnation for another.
On Item 4, the council considered a show-cause order to condemn a building at 725 Petrie Street under Article 9, Sections 5-286 through 5-296 of the city code of ordinances. A contractor on the site described ongoing progress to replace rotted material and said structural work was nearly complete and that a framing inspection would likely be requested by the end of the week. The council voted to postpone action and set a review date of May 12 so the property’s repairs can proceed.
The council also addressed a building at 113 Arkansas Street (Item B). Contractor Cody Smith told the council the interior is sheetrocked and much progress has occurred; he asked for an extension. The council moved to extend the deadline to the May 12 review date, with the understanding that if work completes before then the matter will be removed from the docket.
Separately, the council voted to condemn the structure at 505 North Claiborne Street (Item C), finding it open and unsafe. Council members recorded affirmative votes to proceed with condemnation under the same Article 9 code provisions cited for other cases.
What council members said - Jeremiah Mills, who identified himself as working for the general contractor on 725 Petrie Street, told the council: “We’re almost finished removing and replacing all rot. There’s no mold ... we’re getting ready, probably by the end of the week to call for a structural inspection.” - Cody Smith, a contractor on 113 Arkansas Street, said: “It’s sheetrock now ... All the sheetrock’s hung and the first coat of mud’s out inside.”
Next steps The council set May 12 as the next review date for the two postponed matters (725 Petrie Street and 113 Arkansas Street). Code Enforcement will track inspections and return any cases to the council earlier if repairs are completed before that date. For 505 North Claiborne Street, condemnation procedures will proceed under Article 9, Sections 5-286 through 5-296 of the code of ordinances.
The council’s votes on these items were recorded during the meeting; members registering affirmative votes included Miss Eleanor, Mister Nadezak, Miss Carden, Miss Harding and Miss Thomas.
