The Aiken Design Review Board unanimously approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for window replacement at 348 Newbury Street Southwest, allowing the homeowner to replace deteriorating wood frames with vinyl-clad windows that include permanently applied divided lights.
Applicant Lynn Sampson told the board many frames are rotting, some windows will not lock or open properly, and several are safety concerns; she said the house is roughly a century old and original windows have reached the end of useful life. Staff described the proposal as replacing all windows except four kitchen windows, and replacing the kitchen windows with a 3-over-1 vertical grid as proposed by the owner.
A board member noted the applicant selected a high-quality product with interior and exterior applied grills and that the choice is consistent with guidance for replacement windows in the design manual. The board approved application CERH205-304 by unanimous vote.
