DRB approves discreet attic louvers for north-wing HVAC at Aiken library

The Aiken Design Review Board unanimously approved a Certificate of Appropriateness permitting drainable horizontal louvers to be installed behind existing dormer window sashes on the library's north wing to accommodate fresh-air intake for a recent renovation.
Staff explained the renovated north wing required mechanical fresh-air intake to meet current building codes; the applicant proposed removing older external storm windows on dormers, retaining the original sashes and placing black louvers behind them so the exterior appearance remains largely unchanged. Applicant Steve Denton said the louvers are intended to "look like a shadow behind the windows," and that with the existing white sashes and black louvers the effect will be inconspicuous from the street.
Board members had no substantive objections and voted unanimously to approve application CERH25-029. No public opposition was recorded.
