The council interviewed multiple applicants, including Kyle Sadness, Don Steinke, Ron Barca and Dominic (last name recorded as Maello). Kyle Sadness, who told the council he works at the Port of Longview as a project engineer and project manager, emphasized infill and “middle housing” as priorities, saying, “We need to strike a balance there.” Ron Barca described the role differently, saying he saw his task as one to “keep Clark County in compliance with the Growth Management Act.”
During deliberations, council members cited different strengths among the finalists. Supporters of Ron Barca highlighted his work on the county's housing option study and his experience with tiny‑home projects and housing initiatives, saying those skills would aid efforts to address affordability. Supporters of Kyle Sadness pointed to his engineering and public‑works background and his focus on permitting, infill and middle‑housing solutions.
Nominations opened after the council returned from executive session. A councilor nominated Kyle Sadness; another councilor nominated Ron Barca. After a roll‑call vote that cited each councilor’s preferred nominee, the tally was three votes for Kyle Sadness and two for Ron Barca; the council certified the appointment immediately after the vote.
The new commissioner will join the panel as the county moves through a year with a heavy workload on the comprehensive‑plan update and related Growth Management Act implementation tasks. Council members noted the planning commission will be asked to review policy options and serve as a sounding board for land‑use, housing and infrastructure proposals.
The council chair closed by thanking all applicants for applying and reminding the public that planning‑commission openings are volunteer positions and that further opportunities to serve may arise in the future.
