OKCPS presents NWEA growth report; showcases scholars who exceeded projections

Senior directors Verna Martin and Laura McGee presented the district’s student‑outcomes work and explained that the district uses NWEA MAP Growth to project student progress and correlate it to state assessments. Verna Martin said the MAP Growth assessment ‘‘gives educators insights on growth and achievement norms’’ and outlined how the district uses the data to target support.
Laura McGee and other leaders shared six “scholar success” spotlights. Natalie Papa George Johnson described a fourth‑grade English‑learner from Adams Elementary whose projected reading growth was 7 RIT points but who achieved 26 growth points from fall to winter; staff said that moved the student’s achievement percentile from the 24th to the 60th percentile and projected the student to be proficient on the state test. Shane Sanders presented additional secondary spotlights, including an 11th‑grade student at John Marshall Enterprise High School who exceeded a 1‑point projection with 19 RIT points and reached the 90th percentile in achievement.
District staff reported that across reading and math more than 11,000 OKCPS scholars doubled their projected growth from fall to winter. Board Chair Paula Lewis asked staff to also highlight students who met their goals at a future presentation; staff agreed to include that information next time.
Verna Martin said the district will continue using targeted small groups, differentiated instruction and 90‑day site plans to sustain growth and prepare final‑year assessments.
