Hewitt council declares unopposed candidates elected and cancels May general election

The Hewitt City Council approved ordinance 2025-06 to declare unopposed candidates elected and cancel the May 3, 2025, general election under Section 2.052 of the Texas Election Code. City Manager Mr. Thomas read the ordinance caption and listed the unopposed candidates the city received certificates for; council approved the ordinance by voice vote.
Mr. Thomas congratulated Brad Turner, Bob Potter, Eric Curtis and Michael Van Halen as the candidates for whom the city received certificates of unopposed candidacy. During the item a councilmember noted errors in the ward and place listings on page 50 of the meeting packet; staff said the cover sheet was correct and that the detailed page would be corrected prior to final signature.
Councilmember Stevens moved to approve the ordinance; Councilmember Doctor Bruce seconded. The meeting transcript records the mayor saying “Motion carries 6 to 2” at one point and later records the outcome as “6 to 0.” The ordinance was approved and staff said the same item for the special election would be brought to a subsequent meeting.
The item references Section 2.052 of the Texas Election Code and will be entered into the city records with corrected ward references before signature.
