Parents, alumni and former players praise coach Lisa Griffiths at Bear Valley Unified public comment

Several parents, alumni and former players used the public comment period of the Bear Valley Unified School District board meeting to urge the board to retain girls soccer coach Lisa Griffiths, saying she has had a lasting academic and personal influence on students.

Speakers said Griffiths enforces clear expectations, treats players consistently and supports students academically. Erin Baum, class of 2005, told the board that Griffiths “had already begun to become one of the most influential” people in her life and that her influence has continued for two decades. Jessica Norman, also identified as class of 2005, said Griffiths “was a strong leader with a friendly yet firm demeanor” who checked on injured players and helped them return to sport and school.

Those who spoke described similar themes: Griffiths sets firm standards, holds players accountable for attendance and academics, and provides mentorship that extends beyond athletics. One speaker read several written statements into the record on behalf of parents and alumni. The group said seven to eight supporters attended the meeting and submitted written comments.

Comments came during the designated public comment slot; the board did not respond directly to individual remarks during that period, consistent with the procedures announced at the meeting. No board action on the coach’s employment was reported during the public comment period.

The remarks were limited to the public comment portion of the meeting and did not include a formal agenda item or vote about coaching assignments or personnel.
