Douglas County trustees ask staff to research homework policy, including breaks and feedback

The Douglas County School District Board of Trustees unanimously directed staff to gather information and return with recommendations on a district homework policy, saying trustees want data on how homework is assigned, graded and how assignments affect students and families.

The motion, made during an item titled "development of a homework policy," asked staff to collect relevant research, survey teacher practice and report back to the board with proposed policy language or next steps. Trustees said the goal is to balance student learning and engagement with mental health and family time.

Trustees and members of the public voiced concerns about heavy homework packets being assigned over scheduled breaks and inconsistent homework grading practices. Several trustees and speakers said they want clearer guidance for teachers and more consistent feedback to students.
