Yakima resident urges county help after alleged squatter remodels home, threatens homeowner

Ken Stevens, a resident who gave his address as 5712 Terrace Ice Drive, told the Board of Yakima County Commissioners during public comment that an individual living on or near his property has occupied and remodeled spaces without permits, threatened him with a gun and that county inspections and police have not resolved the matter.
Stevens said the person moved in around June, renovated interior spaces without permits and threatened to shoot him if he entered the property. He said he applied for a permit to do work at his property and that county staff initially issued a stop-work order for the other person’s work; Stevens told the board the county “refuses to come out” to take further action. He also said the person was demanding money for work done without building permits.
Stevens asked for more information about how the county handles “squatter” situations and for help; a commissioner asked him to leave contact information with staff so the county can follow up. The concerns were raised during public comment and did not prompt any formal action at the Feb. 25 meeting.
