Castilla told the council she grew up in Spokane and said the library “was like everything” to her while she was homeschooled. “I have really fond memories of just going and reading for hours during the day,” she said. She said she later moved back to raise her family and wants to help preserve and expand library services for the community.
The council pressed Castilla on how she would support homeschool families. Castilla said she had been homeschooled as a child but is not currently homeschooling her daughter. “My experience with homeschooling is, like the world is how you learn. Right? You’re not necessarily stuck in a school environment,” she said, adding that the library’s range of programs — from yoga classes to cultural programs — supports a range of learners.
When asked about familiarity with budgets, Castilla said she works for the state and “manage[s] a state budget.” She told the council that, given constrained funding, she would prioritize services that serve the broadest population and look for partnerships and innovative funding approaches to sustain programs.
Council President Wilkerson thanked Castilla for applying and said the council would follow up; no appointment or vote was taken during the agenda review meeting.
Castilla’s interview ended with the council saying applicants will be contacted about next steps.
