A commissioner reported meeting with Eric Olmstead of State Parks about the SR 14 realignment plan. The county representative said State Parks is currently seeking funding only for the design-and-engineering phase, not for construction.
The commissioner emphasized concerns about emergency-vehicle access and parking near the park’s main features, including ensuring crews can reach the backside of Eden Rock and the falls used by climbers. The update also noted a proposed reroute of a treacherous trail section that has produced the majority of trail rescues in recent years; the intent is to reduce rescues by realigning the trail and improving access for responders.
The commissioner said they had discussed moving the main parking area westward and ensuring space for emergency-vehicle parking and rescues, and that they had raised issues about winter-weather impacts on a proposed roundabout. The commissioner also described an idea brought up in discussions with Representative Marie Lopez’s office: building a one-lane emergency access road from the east end of the landing through the park down to an initial parking area to reach an overpass over the railroad, so emergency apparatus could cross the tracks if needed.
