The Board of Education approved an initial AI policy on second read and discussed plans to assemble an AI task force to refine the district’s approach and include student and community voices.
Policy committee members and administrators convened with a community expert this summer and suggested the board adopt a preliminary policy to allow teachers to use approved AI tools for instruction and professional development. Board members said they expect the policy to evolve and recommended forming a task force that would include teacher leaders, administrators, community experts and students to address data security, ethical use and how AI affects instruction and students’ views of future work.
Administrators said teachers have sought professional development to use AI in instruction but could not adopt tools district-wide in the absence of a policy. Board members endorsed the immediate policy adoption to provide a framework for teachers and to form a task force that will advise further policy changes and implementation.
