Sheriff asks council to fund three merit deputies after federal grant was denied

Sheriff Derek Falvio told the council that a federal COPS grant extension his office had sought was denied and that the sheriff—9s office has already hired three merit deputies on Jan. 6. He asked the council to appropriate $257,659.50 to cover the deputies—9 salaries and related costs for 2025.
Falvio said the department had previously received grant funding that phased down over the grant—9s term, and that when the extension was denied the county was left to fund the positions. He said the sheriff—9s office had gained minimum staffing from three to four patrol deputies and that the hired deputies were filling vacancies and training.
Council members asked about the timing of the grant application and denial; Falvio said the original grant process dated to 2021, the department had received two grant-supported deputies previously, and the extension request was denied in December. Councilman Gentry asked whether the three new deputies are in addition to the earlier positions; Falvio confirmed the county is now fully funding five positions that previously had partial or full grant support.
Falvio said the request for the three deputies totals $257,659.50; he said deputies were hired because of public-safety needs and understaffing concerns. The item was presented as an appropriation request; the council did not record a formal vote on the appropriation at this meeting.
